MARLEY ALUTEC ‘FLYING HIGH’ AT HISTORIC REYMERSTON HALL

Marley Alutec 'Flying High' At Historic Reymerston Hall

Marley Alutec’s aluminium Aligator Ogee 46 gutter system and Traditional downpipes were specified for the renovation of Reymerston Hall, previously home to James Bond stunt man and Wing Commander, Sir Ken Wallis. Selected due to its specialism in conservation and heritage properties, Marley Alutec manufactured bespoke gutter offsets to accommodate the difficult building dimensions.

Located in Norfolk, Reymerston Hall is a six-bedroom, Grade II listed, Georgian property with over 11.5 acres of land. Famously, the property was home to Sir Ken Wallis where he lived and flew for over 60 years. In addition to the house there is a two-storey brick and tile barn, as well as a hangar and workshop where Sir Ken kept and worked on his collection of autogyros.

Following four years of inhabitancy, Reymerston Hall was put up for auction by Sir Ken Wallis’ family and sold to Liz & Keith Holbrook who are now restoring the property to become an idyllic wedding venue.

Roof Replacement Process

Due to the age and condition of the property, Reymerston Hall needed a complete roof replacement which involved installing new Koramic 451 clay tiles and lead abutment flashing to both hips and ridge. Specified by both contractor, K M Holbrook and the listed conservation officer Andrew Gayton, Marley Alutec provided the ideal guttering solution that integrated the old and new aspects of the building.

Marley Alutec’s Aligator Ogee No 46 gutter system was used on the majority of the house due to its internal joints and concealed brackets, offering a sleek and unobtrusive solution for the building’s traditional architecture.

Traditional 102x102mm square downpipes were installed on the rear of the property, to match the building’s existing but refurbished cast iron hoppers.

Both systems were selected in white to match the colour of the original rainwater systems used on the property. The products are manufactured entirely from marine grade aluminium with an architectural grade polyester powder coat paint finish. This means they are highly corrosion and fade resistant, which is crucial for a listed building that requires low maintenance and longevity.

“The Marley Alutec products met all of our requirements in terms of appearance and durability,” said Liz Holbrook at K M Holbrook. “The Traditional downpipes looked superb alongside the original elements of the building, while the clean lines of Aligator Ogee No 46 guttering system helped to create a sleek frame to the building.”

“Furthermore, any complications we had on-site due to the unique and historic structure of the building were not an issue for Marley Alutec. For instance, due to the dimensions of the building, we couldn’t incorporate two bends into the gutter at the front of the property. Therefore, Marley Alutec designed bespoke gutter offsets to allow the system to provide a single run with no additional downpipes. If the standard dimensions were used, the guttering would have been too large for the space.”

Ross Hardingham, Director at RH Roofing Ltd, the company responsible for installation, commented: “Alutec’s products were simple to install and I appreciated the technical support that we received. This included a full-site survey and on-site assistance.

“When it comes to heritage projects, even the most experienced roofing contractor can come across structural issues and it was great to know that Alutec was there to help if required. I am pleased to say I have every confidence in the longevity and high-quality of the products.”

While work on the exterior of the building is now complete, there are still internal works in progress and further renovations are being planned for the outbuildings.
