Finishing / Coating
- 1. Can aluminium be installed unpainted?
Yes. Once exposed, they will slowly oxidize uniformly to a dull grey colour. The oxide then protects the material from further corrosion.
- 2. Will the Polyester Powder Coating peel off if scratched?
No. Only badly applied PPC will peel off. However, we recommend that any scratched surfaces be repaired for aesthetic reasons, using appropriate touch up paint, available as an accessory item code SC880.
Products
- 1. Where do I buy Alutec products?
Marley Alutec supply their range of products via nationwide network of distributors (usually builders merchants).
Please contact customer services for details of your nearest stockist:
Tel: 01234 359438
Email: sales@marleyalutec.co.uk- 2. What is the delivery lead time to merchant?
Evolve in Heritage black 3 working days Roof, floor & shower outlets 2 - 5 working days Aligator Classic in Heritage black, black or white 2 - 5 working days Mill finish 5 - 10 working days Polyester powder coated 10 - 15 working days - 3. How long is the product guaranteed for?
Aluminium guttering resists corrosion even in its raw, unpainted form. When exposed to air, aluminium forms an oxide ‘barrier layer' on the surface, which despite being only nanometres thick, is bonded extremely strongly and prevents any further attack. In practice, this means a predicted service life for aluminium guttering of 40 years or more, even in its unpainted form.
- 4. Are joint unions included with the Aligator range of gutters?
No, they need to be ordered separately as the quantity may vary dependant on how many short gutter off cuts are used.
- 5. Should wire balloons be fitted to gutter outlets?
We do not recommend fitting wire balloons as they collect the debris and restrict or block flow through the outlet. Small debris will normally wash down through the down pipe. However if the problem is caused by leaf blockage, then installation of a leaf guard is recommended.
- 6. Can you curve gutters to a given radius?
Yes, refer to Non Standard Requirement Section
- 7. I am a Builder's Merchant and would like to know the minimum order values for Alutec products.
There is no minimum order value for Alutec products, however, the following terms and conditions apply.
Order value at List Delivery Charge Up to £25 £8 £25 - £500 £15 £500 - £750 £25 £750 or more No Charge - 8. I need a colour other than one of the 20 standard colours - is that possible? Is there an extra charge?
Yes it is possible, as long as you have a RAL reference, charges are as follows:
Set up charges for non-standard colours
Any colour ordered that is not one of the 20 standard colours shown in the Alutec literature and website is subject to a net £60 set up charge. This charge is applied each time we run the colour. Extra powder costs may also apply, depending on the colour and order value. Please check with the customer service team on 01234 359438 before you place the order.
Installation
- 1. Do you have a list of approved Installers?
A product installation training scheme for independent installers has been launched by Alutec and a list of geographically placed trained installers is available on request. Please call 01234 344108 for details.
- 2. Can aluminium gutters and pipes be jointed to cast iron?
Yes. There is no bi-metallic corrosion incompatibility between the two materials.
- 3. Can lead be dressed into aluminium gutters?
Yes. There is no significant corrosive effect between lead and aluminium.
- 4. Can aluminium gutters be used in conjunction with a copper roof?
No. The copper oxide ‘run off' will corrode the unprotected surfaces of aluminium, e.g. such as the insides of PPC'd downpipes which cannot be painted or mill finish systems.
- 5. Can aluminium gutters and pipe be used with a Zinc roof?
Yes, as long as there is no metal to metal contact between the two materials.
- 6. How do I connect to an existing gutter of different size and profile?
There are no standard adaptor connectors available as there are too many different profiles and sizes of gutters. Bespoke adaptors can be fabricated to order, but are very expensive. We recommend that an adaptor coupling be made on site, dressed from Code 5 lead to fit the external profiles of both abutting gutters, then bedded in sealant and secured by drilling and bolting to both gutter ends using M6 aluminium nuts bolts and washers, available as standard accessories.
- 7. Should rainwater pipe joints be sealed?
All aluminium pipes with ‘cast sockets’ should be sealed, as described in the installation section, as the depth of socket is shallow and water may overspill in heavy rainfall. However the Vortex® and Vandal Resistant ranges of pipes need not be sealed apart from the first connection to a gutter or hopper outlet.
- 8. Can we use a different joint sealant to the Marley Alutec SC101?
We do not recommend it as our sealant has been tested and we know it works. Other sealants may not have the same characteristics and may lead to early joint failure.
- 9. Do all gutters need to be fixed to a fall?
No. Larger decorative gutters are installed nominally level for aesthetic reasons and these gutters are appropriately sized to cope with the anticipated rainfall. However, smaller gutters in particular the Traditional Half Round and Victorian Ogee ranges are generally installed to a fall of 1:600.
